 "The PRO Game"

The PRO Game is a marathon hockey game that took place on May 9 and 10 at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. Forty-two (42) hockey players hit the ice for 24 hours to have some fun, get some exercise, and most importantly raise money for three local charities. The charities are the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, The Boys & Girls Club and The Hearth and Stoke Foundation.

Rotarian Ken McCormick is one of the players who organized the PRO Game. He ensured the PRO Game was a success and motivated all players to fundraise.  Many Rotarians also volunteered to help out at the event.

All of the players involved in the event are friends, which made for a really fun and competitive game. The players trained hard in preparation for the big game.

The players are in all different stages of their hockey career. This year, Ken was excited to have 2007 Stanley Cup winner, Joe DiPenta and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice participating in the game. Also included in the star lineup are Roddy MacCormick, Toronto Maple Leafs NHL, Mike Kelly, Philadelphia Flyers NHL, and Steve Widmeyer, Moncton Hawks AHL.

The final Score was 125 to 95 but the real winners were the charities. The event raised $61,233 and of this the Heart & Stroke Foundation received $29,933, the Boys and Girls Club received $20,000 and the Alzheimer’s Society received $11,300.

This was the third such marathon hockey game organized by Ken and his friends and so far they have racked up an impressive list of accomplishments including: raising over $125,000 for various charities, being featured on CBC's "Hockey Day in Canada", being inducted into the Windsor Hockey Heritage Hall of Fame and setting a Guinness Book World Record for the longest hockey game.
