YEAR IN REVIEW -- 2011-2012

How fast a year
goes!! During the visit of our Scottish colleagues, a gentleman asked me what my role was in our Club. When I told him I was the incoming president, his comment was; “you know, by the time you get good and comfortable with it, and just get the ball rolling, your year will be over.” How true that is. This fiscal year was another successful year for the Rotary Club of Dartmouth. My one disappointment was that we failed to increase our membership; as Bill Lemmon keeps reminding us, the future of Rotary depends on attracting new members; we need them to survive as an organization to continue making change in the world.

With a committee spearheaded by Gord Gamble, Jim Kirby, and Bob Johnson, we were able to get a great Strategic Plan in place to guide our club in the future. A club assembly in early November, and a survey sent to members, received input from all members who wished their ideas heard. This resulted in a draft plan being presented to the Board, and subsequently to the entire Club for approval.

Our support for the Foundation has never been higher, thanks to our Foundation chair, Bill Lemmon, and we are now donating at least $100.00 per member. On the international side, under the direction of International Chair Robert Earle, our commitment in Guatemala, Africa, Afghanistan, to Health Partners International, and Polio Plus, is exemplary. Locally, Community chair Dave Garnier has worked tirelessly to find projects that we should be funding in our community. He and Gary Frail have a passionate commitment to the Community Garden/ Classroom of the Take Action Society, and will see it through to fruition. I am including an attachment of our projects this past year; I think it’s pretty impressive for a club such as ours.

When it comes to thanking people, it’s hard to do without fear of leaving someone out, but thanks to all of you our club works as well as it does. When it counts,--like raising funds at the Spring Classic, our members step to the plate and do what they can. A special thanks to the Board of Directors, especially the committee chairs, treasurers Ed and Doug, and secretary Alex.

The last thing I’d like to do as my term draws to a close is acknowledge our Rotarian of the Year. Unfortunately, I could not pick just one. So, would Dave Garnier and Alex Handyside please come forward to accept the Rotarian of the Year Award!

Let us look in the future for its needs – for the one purpose of making Rotary a moving force toward the advancement of world understanding in the community, country and the world, and I would like to ask you to give Gord the same loyal support you have given me. Thanks.
Don Penwell
